Questions for Reflection

In “The Case of the Bipolar Three-Year-Old,” the therapist didn’t really respond directly to Frederick’s concern about his son’s being “bipolar.” Instead, after observing the family, she decided the father needed to allow himself to play. Do you think this was a good choice? Have you ever worried about mental illness in your own children? Has this story affected how you think now?

The tragic story of “The Littlest Victim” made headlines when it occurred. What do you think of Dr. Biederman, the celebrated Harvard psychiatrist, in this story? If you brought your child to this doctor, do you think you would be able to question their recommendations?

In “The Case of the Five-Year-Old Boss,” the little son could indeed be a ferociously strong-willed child. This session revealed the family dynamics behind his temper tantrums. Why do you think the mother was so afraid that the father would get too angry with their son, though the father gave no evidence of that? Do you have any hypotheses about why she felt the need to “protect” the son from the father? Have you seen this dynamic in yourself or others?

In the story “The Little Prince and the Waif,” little Lucy had become the family scapegoat. Have you seen families, your own or others, where there is a “good” child and a “bad” child? Does this story help you see these dynamics in a new way?
